HISD’s comprehensive teacher induction program begins with personalized summer Early Hire Summit and New Teacher Academy and continues throughout the school year with timely, targeted professional learning opportunities grounded in the HISD Instructional Practice Rubric that lead to growth and development as a new teacher.
Beginning and new teachers can engage in a wide variety and level of support systems. Learning sessions are developed and facilitated to over 40 KEY Teachers who make up the Professional Learning Opportunities Team (PLOT). These sessions are campus-based workshops, school tours, teacher workstation labs, instructional technology sessions, and practice implementation frameworks through our five core Learning Series: Teach Like a Champion (TLaC Tuesdays), New Teacher Saturdays (Guided Cycle Series), Creating a Climate of Success for All (Classroom Culture & Management), CHAMPS (PBIS) specialized training (content test preparation, SpED, A4E) and campus-based early dismissal learning days.

New teacher hires in HISD are required to complete foundational TADS training within five days of their start date. HISD's Teacher Appraisal and Development System (TADS) is designed to ensure effective teaching in every classroom, which ultimately translates into improved student outcomes. The appraisal system is built around effective feedback and individualized professional support. Teacher development is aligned to the Instructional Practice Rubric, comprised of criteria for teacher effectiveness in planning, instruction, and professionalism.
